After giving this a lot of thought, I have decided to release a public beta of my upcoming theme Carbonite for Mac OS X and Shapeshifter. Obviously I don’t have much time to work on this theme (which I started some time ago) but I have been wanting to share it with the world. So here goes… Carbonite Public Beta #1.

You will need a copy of Shapeshifter from Unsanity and a copy of the Carbonite Beta guiKit which can be obtained by clicking the preview image below. (The download will automatically open the Shapeshifter Preference Pane.)

Carbonite Public Beta 1

A few important things to note.

1. This theme is still in raw beta form so there are some things not finished.

2. A lot of the “small” states of elements are not finished or haven’t been themed

3. Progress Bars remain aqua in this version.

4. Lastly, Please do not modify, hack, redistribute or otherwise mangle this work in progress. I will continue to work on the theme and make announcements as updates become available.

If you see something you don’t like, please leave a comment here and I will read your opinion. Other than that… enjoy!

[...] Updated OS X to 10.4.7 and had some extra time to play around and upload a few screenshots. Wallpaper is a quick thing I made in Photoshop and the theme is Carbonite by Brian Zeitler. Lets not forget Brian works at Apple and when he releases themes, they are up there in quality even in beta stages. [...]

Finally a new and exciting theme in the Mac GUI customization world! For the first time in months, I’m gonna launch shapeshifter again.
Excellent work Brian. Can’t wait for the final version.
Hope everything is going well at cuppertino.
    Again, Well done!

Nice stuff, Brian. Keep it up, can’t wait for the final version! Now all I need is my alluvium update, and I’ll be satisfied :-P!

Man oh Man, this is great. You’re really bringing it home with this one. The only thing that nags me the tiniest bit is the red glow on Push Buttons, but it’s just a small thing, and i can see why you’d want some color.

    Really nice job, Brian.

I have a bug report…sort of. The metal window texture element is 512 pixels wide by 1600 pixels tall and shouldn’t tile vertically on a 1680 x 1050 screen but it does. The dimensions listed in tpark only show the height as 160 pixels. Maybe this is a Smeger issue. I think the bevels might need to be remade to contain the top window gradient highlight vs doing it via giganto images.

  9. digitaljames Says:

    OK…I remade the texture element 1 x 30,000 and problem solved….lol

    Hey DJ,
Thanks for letting me know about the bug. I will look into it when I get home. I wonder if it is possibly a Themepark issue because the resource works properly on my 1680×1050 display at home. Thanks for the heads up though!

this is very cool. Wish i could get a mac.

    anyone offering??

I’ve already said this on Guistyles.com, but this beta is so much crisper than aqua! Haven’t yet tried it, but I still go with my theory that you should be an Apple graphic artist!
    Possible additions:
    - Making a graphite version (not the buttons and apple logo kinda graphite, but making the metal windows and menu bar graphite instead of the light gray
    - Transparencey? Ok, it’s kinda irrelevant, but it would look awsome…
    Good Work!

I’d love to see an update soon with the new elements, refined scrollbars and iTunes 7 support. This is my favourite guikit by far. Thanks for this, Brian :)
